Clear your calendars, grab your friends, and sign up for Texas Oncology Foundation Survive & Thrive Conference 2024. If you are a cancer patient, survivor, caregiver, or a healthcare professional, you’re invited to attend. This two-day cancer conference includes workshops and lectures led by local and national experts and opportunities to connect with others whose lives have been affected by cancer.

It’s a terrific opportunity to learn, be inspired, meet new people, and have fun. Held September 28-29 in Georgetown (near Austin), this inspiring event bridges the gap between cancer treatment and survivorship. Come for the day on Saturday or make it a weekend with more activities on Saturday night and Sunday.

Clay Hummer, a participant in the Survive & Thrive Virtual Experience programs, is excited to attend the conference. “There is a lot of good information in the programs, but the main benefit is the community that develops during the seminars. It is always very nice to see that you are not alone in some of your thoughts, feelings, and issues,” said Clay. “I don’t know how many of these I have attended, but they are always packed fresh with new topics and speakers and information.”

Keynote speaker Cindy Trice, a veterinarian, cancer survivor, and co-founder and chief innovation officer for KickIt Pajamas, will share the unexpected silver linings of a cancer diagnosis. Crowd favorite Tamika Felder, cancer survivor and founder and chief visionary for Cervivor, will return as our dynamic emcee. Dr. Kathryn Hudson, director of survivorship at Texas Oncology, will share her perspectives on survivorship.

Clay’s advice?  “Please sign up and show up!

When Hurricane Beryl hit the Texas Gulf Coast on July 8, its impact was devastating for many, including Texas Oncology employees. Through Texas Oncology Foundation disaster relief grants for Texas Oncology employees, financial grants have helped with expenses caused by the storm and the subsequent power outages. Nearly 70 employees have received assistance after Hurricane Beryl with grants totaling approximately $50,000.

“We are so proud that people from all across Texas Oncology came together to help our fellow employees in their time of need,” said R. Steven Paulson, M.D., president and chairman of the board at Texas Oncology. “Generous donations from Texas Oncology physicians and staff, along with a donation match from Texas Oncology, supported Texas Oncology employees who were directly affected by Hurricane Beryl.”

“This means the world to me. Thank you so much, I cannot describe the impact this will make for me,” said a grateful grant recipient.

The fund was established in 2017 after Hurricane Harvey to help Texas Oncology employees who are impacted by a declared natural disaster.

For a caregiver in Round Rock, Texas, Caregiver Connections has provided crucial support during his wife’s cancer diagnosis. Since August 2022, Joe has been her primary caregiver, managing both physical and emotional challenges.

Joe discovered Caregiver Connections through a social worker at Texas Oncology, thanks to a Twitter acquaintance. This group offered him a much-needed safe space to express himself and connect with others in similar situations. With limited outside support, he found the group’s camaraderie invaluable.

Caregiving has taken a toll on Joe, both physically and emotionally. His wife’s deteriorating condition added to his responsibilities, and he acknowledges that the relationship feels strained. Counseling has helped, but Caregiver Connections remains a vital outlet.

He emphasizes the importance of listening without judgment or unsolicited advice, something he values in the group. For anyone in a similar position, he advocates for finding such an outlet, as it provides essential support and understanding.

Caregiver Connections has been a lifeline, offering stability and solidarity in a difficult journey, underscoring the critical role of support networks for caregivers. Find more information about Caregiver Connections, which meets the first and third Thursdays each month from 10:00 to 11:00 am.
