Supporting Cancer Patients and Their Families in the Communities Where They Live,
Work and Receive Treatment.
Cancer Does Not Define You
A cancer diagnosis can seem like a striking blow to your life, whether you are a patient or a caregiver. It disrupts plans. It can create hardships. Yet, cancer does not define you. It is a disease you have, but it is not your identity. Your spirit, your personality, and your relationships are all still the essence of you. So, on those days when cancer tries to take over, gently remind yourself that it is not your full being. Then do something you enjoy, even if it needs to be low-energy and low-key.
We complete our Summer series on emotional health in this edition. In case you missed it, check out parts one, two, three, four, and five.

Each year, Texas Oncology Foundation hosts events like Celebrate Life 5K and survivor walks/runs, Uncork to Support wine tastings, and a golf tournament – all with a shared goal: supporting the whole person through their cancer experience by raising funds.
While a patient may appear to be managing treatment well, the emotional toll may be hidden. Social work plays a vital role in bridging the gap between physical care and emotional needs. Social workers find that some patients face non-medical barriers to treatment. The Foundation’s fundraising efforts help patients overcome real-world challenges like transportation, lodging, or choosing between paying for rent or for treatment. Funds raised stay in the community to help local patients.
These events serve as a reminder that life doesn’t pause during cancer care. The combined involvement of providers, social workers, and the Foundation can address patients’ full range of needs. Supporting these events is more than charity, it’s an investment in comprehensive, person-centered care. It brings the care team together around a shared vision: to help patients survive and navigate the complex realities of life during cancer treatment. In doing so, Texas Oncology moves closer to treating the whole person, not just the disease.
