Kickoff To Summer

As the Texas heat starts to settle in among the Spring rainstorms, there’s something energizing about the shift into Summer. It’s a season that invites lighter moments, small adventures, and a fresh sense of possibility — even if your pace looks different this year. Summer doesn’t have to be loud or busy to be meaningful. Sometimes it’s simply about finding, comfort, and joy right where you are.

This issue marks the start of our new summer travel series in the biweekly newsletter: Easy Escapes: StressLess Travel Tips. Whether you’re planning a road trip, flying to see family, or simply navigating a day out in the sun, this series will offer practical, patient and survivor-centered guidance to help you travel safely, comfortably, and confidently all season long.

Easy Escapes:
Stress‑Less Travel Tips – Part I

Welcome to part I of our summer series on travel tips for patients and survivors. Maygen Nolan, LCSW, OSW-C, manager, social work, Texas Oncology, shares some moves for navigating a summer trip nimbly, even if your stamina or needs aren’t what they used to be – and that’s ok. Changing your approach to travel can make it quite enjoyable.

Listen to your body.
If you need to rest, rest. If plans feel like too much, adjust them. Successful travel doesn’t mean pushing through fatigue.

Plan your energy.
Schedule rest days, choose shorter travel days, and avoid packing too many activities into one day. It’s okay to travel slower.

Redefine what a “successful trip” looks like.
Let go of keeping up with old travel paces and focus instead on meaningful moments — one great activity, a nice meal, or simply being in a new place can be enough. Adjusting expectations helps reduce frustration and makes the trip feel enjoyable rather than exhausting.
